High resolution mass spectrometry helps in PFAS screening
“Screening for PFAS in drinking water and food is currently receiving a lot of attention,” says Danny van Oevelen, product specialist liquid chromatography at Agilent. The screening is difficult because there are many different PFAS components (more than 6000), so you do not know what you are looking for in a sample. Detection limits for PFAS are becoming lower, because legislation becomes increasingly strict. “So you need a device with high resolution and high sensitivity. The QTOF (quadrupole time-of-flight) mass spectrometer is such a device. Our latest version of the QTOF, is the Revident,” says van Oevelen. “It can very accurately determine the masses of (unknown) components and identify what they are.”

Triple quadrupole mass spectrometer
“If you do know what components you are looking for in a sample and want to detect even the smallest amounts then our triple quadrupole mass spectrometer is a good choice. It can be used for example in screening food for the presence of specific pesticides, also in combination with gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry.”
Smart innovations and automation
An important development in the new equipment of Agilent are all kinds of smart innovations which ensures greater ease of use. An example is an early maintenance feedback (EMF) system in the equipment which provides a timely warning that certain parts need to be replaced. Or a check tune (for mass spectrometers) that indicates that the device is properly calibrated.
Another important development is automation. For example, by directly linking the processing of a sample to liquid chromatography. Then work can be done faster with fewer people and less chance of errors.
Sustainability is important for Agilent. The devices have an ACT label that indicates how durable the device is.
